Is Muhammad prophesied in John's gospel. NOPE!

There is a new belief that arose from within the Muslim community which says that the prophet of Islam, Muhammad, was mentioned within the biblical scriptures, both in the old and new testament. Many followers of Islamic theology say that Jesus himself prophesied of the coming of prophet Muhammad within the gospel of saint John in the 16th chapter:

[12] I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

To the one who is lacking of even the most basic of biblical knowledge, such a verse spoken by an Imam or apologist would appear very compelling. However, is this what Jesus was really pointing to? It is important to note that Muslim apologists many times strategically pull out a few verses from the biblical narrative in an attempt to prove their position, no matter the context it is originally found in or other verses which speak about the same subject which shed more light on its true interpretation and meaning.

Here is a video of one of Islam’s most popular speakers, Dr Zakir Naik, bringing forth the above argument in one of his lectures. Skip to 5:50.

Within this post, I will demonstrate that the coming comforter is not Muhammad. I will also prove that by believing him to be so forces the Muslims to accept Muhammad as being eternal and Jesus as being God, which, by the way, are gross sins according to Islam.

Let us being..

Within the 14th chapter of the gospel of John, we see that Jesus informs the people of his time and the reader that the comforter (Holy spirit) would abide with the Christians FOREVER. This would only be possible if the Holy spirit was a divine being because only the divine i.e. God is eternal, ever existing. If this is believed to be the prophet Muhammad, then he must be eternal and ever existing. A divine being.

Furthermore, if we look at the context, Jesus makes it clear that his disciples would know him and the spirit of truth shall abide with THEM. This is not possible seeing as Muhammad came at a time when the disciples were long gone within the grave. This would only make sense if Muhammad had existed and interacted with the world before his birth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[16] And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
[17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is impossible not to question the motives of such Islamic apologists when we see that within the very same chapter: 14, Jesus tells us who the comforter actually is : The Holy Ghost. In the Greek, Holy Ghost is Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον. The word Agion means holy. According to the bible, this cannot refer to a man seeing as no man is holy. This coming being is going to be sinless and pure.

In fact, according to Answering Christianity, within a response to one of Sam Shamoun's articles, Islam also says that no man is pure and perfect. The site writes:

“Anyway, according to Islam, no human being is perfect.  Not even Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him himself:
"(The Prophet) frowned and turned away, Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient,  (The Noble Quran, 80:1-5)"
"O Prophet! Why holdest thou to be forbidden that which God has made lawful to thee? Thou seekest to please thy consorts. But God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.  (The Noble Quran, 66:1)"
There are more examples that I can provide, but I think these Noble Verses are sufficient enough.  Most of the Prophets peace be upon them sinned.  Some even sinned terrible sins!  It is up to Allah Almighty to forgive whom He pleases”

So what we see is that even according to the quran Muhammad does not possess the requirements of being the comforter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[26] But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an attempt to prove that Jesus is a man, Muslims point to verses which say that Jesus was SENT by God. According to the quran and the bible, prophets and messengers are all sent by the Lord. However, when we read the following passages which are found within the 15th chapter of John’s gospel, we see that it is JESUS who will send the comforter. Herein is not only evidence that shows us that Jesus and the Father are both one in essence (due to the fact that a few verses earlier Jesus said that the Father will
send the Holy spirit) but it also forces the Muslims to turn Jesus into Allah or like Allah, which is a major sin within Islam. Notice the trap in which the Muslims have thrown themselves into. In an attempt to prove that Jesus is a prophet, they say that he was SENT by God, as all prophets are. Yet, they also say that the coming comforter is Muhammad, another prophet. But in this case, it is JESUS who will send him. So by believing that the comforter is Muhammad, those of the Islamic religion are indirectly forced to believe that Jesus is Muhammad's God seeing as it is Jesus who sends the prophet into the world.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[26] But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
[27] And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning
.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within the 16th chapter of John’s work, we have further evidence to prove that it is JESUS who will send the comforter to the people. Jesus says that it is good for him to leave because if he doesn’t do so, the Holy spirit cannot come. Muslims view this as walking in harmony with their prophetic traditions that say one prophet comes only when another one departs. However, when we look at the context, the reason why the Holy spirit cant come until Jesus goes is because 1) Jesus will send him and 2) the Holy spirit is where Jesus is GOING: heaven. This is why it cannot come until JESUS GOES THERE TO SEND HIM. Notice the meaning behind such a saying. He is telling us that the comforter has an existence in heaven before Jesus goes there and sends him into the world. If this is indeed Muhammad, then the Muslims are guilty of believing that he is eternal, ever existing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[7] Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
[8] And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
[9] Of sin, because they believe not on me;
[10] Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
[11] Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

If Muhammad was the coming comforter spoken of by Jesus, then Muhammad must be eternal, sinless and Jesus must be the one who sent him. Believing in such things goes against the quran itself and leads Muslims to commit sin.

So when viewing the Muslim argument through the lens of the previous verses, we can now understand that the following passages do not refer to the Prophet Muhammad, but the Holy spirit:
[12] I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
